I believe I am one of the world's worst at time management for several reasons. Reason number one is that I am addicted to listening to music, mainly Taylor Swift, and learning all her songs on guitar. Some people (ahem Caitlin) would say that this interest is classified as an obsession, but I think it's more of a hobby. Although I thoroughly enjoy playing guitar, I know that it is a hindrance that must be avoided sometimes. I find myself picking up my guitar to play one particular song, and it turns into a full on jam session with Caitlin, Emma, and Hannah. I believe that this could be easily avoided if I waited until after all my homework was done to play my guitar at all.
Reason number two is a common problem among high school and college students alike. Actually this problem can occur for anyone who has access to a computer and is a registered Facebook user. Facebook, in my opinion, is one of the twenty-first century's most addictive fads. Sometimes I will get on Facebook with the intentions of only checking my comments and an hour later realize that I have been chatting with a friend the whole time. I've found that this problem is more likely to happen when I'm on my computer researching something online for a paper or even typing a paper on Microsoft Word.
The most problematic of my time management issues is that of procrastination. This dirty habit has been in my system for far too long. I can remember times since middle school when I've waited until the last minute to start working on something. Although procrastination can cause problems and perhaps prohibit me from finishing some of my work, it can sometimes be beneficial to my work. Putting emphasis on the word "sometimes," I sometimes find procrastination enhances my creativity. I know I shouldn't strive to procrastinate, and I don't, but in some instances it almost seems unavoidable.

I think you've already hit upon the best solution here: don't get out your guitar until your homework is done. And by "guitar" I mean "everything that keeps your from getting your work done." Set yourself up a schedule, so that you work on homework and practicing between your classes during the day. Then, once dinner is finished, you'll have more time for fun guitar playing. And try setting a timer when you're on FB--it really can help!
ReplyDeleteSince you have to practice guitar for half an hour anyway, we could make songs to help us study! Like the number of sharps and flats in a key signature! ♪B 5 fcgda B 5 sharps♫
ReplyDeleteI definitely understand being addicted to music! I have a big problem with losing time listening to operas and realizing two hours later that I've gotten no work done because I was so interested in the music! Facebook is a problem for me too, but since I've gotten here and started working on a variety of homework assignments on top of research for lessons, I've realized that I have no time to stay on facebook or be on it for that matter! And Caitlyn, your idea is wonderful. You should make them in every key or make it super fun with a pianist and a few singers to spice it up a bit!
ReplyDeleteI know exactly how you feel about the procrastination. That is a BIG problem of mine that I need to work on as well. I feel more rushed when I procrastinate but I think that it actually helps me focus more on what has to be done. Maybe, Maybe not. Maybe it's just in my head but I rally need to kick my procrastination habit.
ReplyDeleteyes, music....I am completely aware of how addicting music can be. I actually, in high school I was addicted to CMT Music channel. I was constantly watching videos any chance I could. I had to eventually stop because it was conflicting with school, so I always avoided doing homework in my living room. Maybe you could avoid doing homework in your dorm room or just put it where you know you will be too lazy to even reach for it. lol
